The General Society of Mayflower Descendants (GSMD) is pleased to announce that Susan Belekewicz has joined its team as Executive Director. A former corporate executive, Susan brings a wide variety of nonprofit and business management experience to compliment the Society’s talented Plymouth-based team and Executive Committee.
Susan will be responsible for managing the General Society of Mayflower Descendants’ business and operations including staff, genealogy research, member services, publications, sales, development, and facilities. GSMD’s headquarters, situated in the historic Plymouth Bay historic district, includes the 18th century Mayflower Society House, Colonial Revival garden, Genealogy Research Library, and Administrative Offices. Locally, Susan will serve as the main public contact for community outreach and will represent the Society in all professional business capacities.
Dr. George P. Garmany, Governor General of the Society said of the new hire: “We are excited to bring Susan into her position at such an important moment in our organization's history. Her extensive experience in business and nonprofit organizations will be invaluable to GSMD. She brings new management skills to our Society at the precise moment that we are taking on new projects, especially those related to the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower voyage. Susan spent over 30 years of her career in the financial services industry in Boston, where she became the Director of Nonprofit Services at State Street Bank. With extensive experience in business management, she is a disciplined financial manager, with deep leadership and human resource management experience. In Cape Cod, she provided fundraising consulting services to a variety of local nonprofit organizations and worked most recently as Executive Director of the Osterville Village Library. Additionally, Susan has served as a Board Member of Duffy Health Center where she was the Chair of their Major Gifts Committee.
Of her new appointment, Susan said: “I feel very fortunate to be joining the organization at such a pivotal time in its history. 2020 marks the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower Pilgrims arrival. The upcoming commemoration presents a wonderful opportunity for our organization to grow and to publicly recognize the significant contribution the Mayflower Pilgrims made to America’s form of governance and society. I look forward to working with this talented team to bring the Mayflower Society into its bright future.”
