Pilgrim Progress 2019

Calling all Mayflower descendants! For the first four Friday evenings in August…(August 2nd, 9th, 16th and 23rd), please join us in participating in Pilgrim Progress, a unique cultural tradition in Plymouth, MA.

Participants, including local Plymouth citizens, Mayflower descendants, and their guests from all walks of life, will dress in costume to represent one of the 51 Pilgrim survivors of that first winter in the New World.

The event begins at 4:45 pm at The Mayflower Society House located at 4 Winslow Street in downtown Plymouth (just up the hill from the rock!), where participants will be matched with a Pilgrim to represent. At around 6:00 pm, in costume and to the beat of a drum, Pilgrim Progress will walk from North Street, moving down Water Street past Plymouth Rock, up Leyden Street and continue to Town Square. This historical walk re-creates the Pilgrims’ procession to church and will end at Burial Hill, where a short Pilgrim worship service will take place at the site of the original fort/meeting house.

First instituted in 1921 as a part of the Town's Tercentenary Celebration, the procession has become a town tradition. We would love to have you join us!

Some things to keep in mind:

Costumes are first come first serve. If you have a large group, please let us know if you will be attending beforehand. If you have your own Pilgrim costume, you are encouraged to wear it! Here are some guidelines on how to Dress Like a Pilgrim!

Please do not wear sneakers, sandals or sunglasses. Wear loafers, docksiders, or brown or black shoes. Participants should also wear long, black socks.

This event is rain or shine. In the case of severe weather, the ceremony will be held on the Mayflower Society porch.

All valuables, including cellphones and cameras, should be safely stored and locked in someone's car. Pilgrim Progress is not responsible for any lost or damage to items. There will be time for pictures before the Progress starts, but electronics are prohibited on the route.
